Indianapolis Family Photography Back in November I had the pleasure of meeting up with Shoshana Brady and her children, Haley and Joshua. I photographed Shoshana and her children as a gift for her husband who was serving in Iraq with the National Guard. Haley had just turned five and Josh was two. And now...nearly a year later, the family is complete again. Miss Haley is five and three quarters...and Joshua an energetic two and three quarters...all according to Haley!! Jason made his way home safe and sound and it was such an honor to photograph them as a complete unit (military pun intended!). Congratulations Brady Family...... and Welcome Home Jason. |

Zionsville Family PhotographyI remember a long time ago a conversation that I had with my mother. It wasn't necessarily a conversation as much as it was a screaming/crying/all out bawling fest. It was a few months after my father had died and my mother was yelling at me with bulging, tear-stained eyes that I didn't understand her grief. I couldn't understand it. And I told her, "You're right. I don't understand....I lost my father. I didn't lose my husband of twenty-seven years, you did". It was at that distinct moment that I recall learning another of life's huge lessons. Everyone's grief is different....no two people grieve the same.
It has been nearly two years since I photographed The Williams Family. When I did so, Dr. Williams was battling cancer....and giving it quite a fight. Sadly, Steve Williams succumbed to the evil disease that took my father as well.
So I was thrilled recently when Kay Williams emailed to say that she wanted updated family photos taken. She wanted photos that showed her family's current life, after Steve, and I couldn't have been more thrilled. Kay was married to a man who loved to laugh.....and now, nearly two years later, she was enjoying that laughter again. I know Kay would tell you if she could, (she's so quiet and shy it would be hard for her)....she would tell you.....
"DON"T WAIT TO TAKE THOSE FAMILY PHOTOS, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT'S AROUND THE BEND!!"
Her family today.... |

| Miss Caroline....see, you look cute when you strut your stuff!! |

| Strong, independent.....and piggyback rides:) |

| Their mother will do almost anything for a laugh...... |

| Discussing dinner plans....Sushi? Cobblestone? McDonald's? |

What I want everyone to understand, is that we all can come up with great reasons not be photographed...."I would love to lose a few pounds" ...or "I just can't find the time to get everyone together"....or, "Maybe when the weather gets better". I've heard it all. I've also heard all the comments after the photo shoots, "I'm so glad we did this"...or "We haven't had photos done for ten years and now I love looking at those images". What are you waiting for...call me.
There is laughter after grief....thank you for sharing that life lesson with me Kay. When I was editing the images, I came across this "tree poem" that I think sums up your spirit.
Think Like a Tree
by Karen I. Shragg
Soak up the sun
Affirm life's magic
Be graceful in the wind
Stand tall after a storm
Feel refreshed after it rains
Grow strong without notice
Be prepared for each season
Provide shelter to strangers
Hang tough through a cold spell
Emerge renewed at the first signs of spring
Stay deeply rooted while reaching for the sky
Be still long enough to
hear your own leaves rustling.

Calling all Desert Lovers.....
|

The desert mountains are gorgeous in the late afternoon. I was excited to recruit a couple of my girlfriends kids to meet me at San Tan Mountain for a late afternoon shoot. As we got closer to our shooting destination the clouds were looking ominous in various directions...however; even with a bit of lighting hovering around we were able to get quite a few AWESOME shots in!!! Amy and Alexa are the lovely daughters of my childhood friend, Donna. Todd is Amy's husband of nearly two years. We spent just an hour or so and it all worked out quite well.
While we waited on Alexa to arrive, we did couple shots with Amy and Todd. They are adorable together..... |

| Happily together. Todd could do a straight face very well....Amy, you could learn from him:) |

| Favorites of the day.....1, 2 and 3. |

| Hello Amy....Abercrombie is calling! |

| Help me out here.....what actress does she remind me of??? |

| Look people of Indiana and New Jersey....those are cacti in the background!!!! |

| Meet Alexa. She is a dancer. This morning she will travel to NYC to perform at the New World Stage. Before she left she rocked this short photo shoot! |

| Alexa's hair was on fire from the beautiful Arizona afternoon sun...... |

| An image any momma would love of her girls....next time we need your sister Kate! Thank you girls for helping me start building a presence in Arizona. You were wonderful to work with and I look forward to seeing more of all of you as we spend more time out here. |

Here's the story, of a dog named Cody....
|

Indianapolis Family Photography(Sung to the theme of the Brady Bunch)
Here's the story, of a dog named Cody,
Who was living with Kristen and Josh.
Everything was going great, in the family,
Until they brought him home......
Actually...the sad little face on Cody is from a torn ACL...not the arrival of Gavin:)
|

| He's just taking it all in....and looking quite adorable in the process. |

| This is how the shoot began. Gavin was in deep slumber. Then I tried it without the blanket....that woke him up! |

| He was all eyes....and arms....and legs.... |

| Kristen and Josh, you have a beautiful family. |

My husband's most favorite place to be in the world is our kitchen table. He loves to be sitting there, with both of our boys at home, listening to them talk about their day. With our oldest, Jeffrey, out in Arizona at school.....and our youngest always on the go with tennis, it's not often anymore that those times occur. But when they do...my husband is in heaven. Last night we sat at the table for a couple of hours listening to them, and Jeffrey's friend Caroline, talk about everything under the sun. I like having everyone home.
This afternoon Jeffrey fueled my photography/learning passion as he helped me practicing off-camera lighting which I'm really starting to DIG!!! It was so hot and humid this afternoon that my cameras took a few minutes to stop fogging up after going from the air-conditioned house to muggy-world outside!! We have more practicing to do...and I'm hoping some friends out in Arizona will be ready for a fun shoot in the desert with off-camera lighting next week!!
This isn't off-camera lighting extreme but I just love my Jeffrey in this image:) |
